In Racehorse, Phipps simply wrote in his journal: ‘Light Airs and Clear Weather Employed as before.’ More informatively, Lutwidge noted: ‘PM the People employed from both ships as in the morning cutting thro’ the Ice ahead of the Racehorse; found it answered no purpose, as we did not advance above 2 or 3 Ships length thro the Ice the whole day and the Ships still drifting to the Eastward, some of the Ice we cut thro was eight feet thick.’ As cutting through 8ft (2.4m) of ice would be exhausting and needed high levels of energy, meals provided were prepared with a very high calorific content by using fats such as suet, and with the issues of butter and cheese being increased.
